Showing off

Here is some excellent advice from Rumi:
Be humble.

If you are rich, don't show off your wealth; you would be tempting those who don't have what you have to steal. They would think, "He has lots anyway. Why shouldn't I steal from him?"

If you are beautiful, don't flaunt it. Make sure you are as beautiful inside as you are outside.

If you have smart children, don't gloat about them. Perhaps the people you are gloating to have children who are not as smart as yours and that would make them feel inferior.

If you are out to help the needy, don't be doing it wearing expensive jewelry and designer clothes.

And most of all, if your right hand is giving charity, your left hand should not know about it. Meaning, all your charity should be done quietly. Don't make a spectacle of helping those in need. Do it and shut up. No one else needs to see it.
