Making peace with animals

Elephant power: Until we stepped in to help, elephants straying outside the borders of Mikumi National Park in search of tasty crops were threatening the livelihoods of local farmers.Hot stuff: Chillies grown by the villagers are part of the elephant deterrent recipe.Well soaked: Rope saturated with chilli and engine oil mixture is used to fence off crops. The chilli fence protects farmland.

Villagers living near a national park in Tanzania were complaining about elephants damaging their crops. WSPA human-animal conflict project staff taught the villagers how to protect their crops and keep the elephants out of their gardens. They soaked thin rope in pepper flavoured and old engine oil and fenced off their gardens. This simple technique kept the elephants out. Now they co-exist peacefully. Deforestation in Tanzania is pushing the elephants and humans to live closer together.
